"The faculty members in the communication department at Alma were very engaging and were teaching interesting things," the 1999 graduate says.  "I especially remember attending a fabulous informational session about the major that was run by Professor Joanne Gilbert. I left her session convinced about taking courses in communication and eventually decided to pursue a major in communication."

Dempsey was attracted to Alma by its liberal arts curriculum and the opportunity to take classes from several different departments.  While at Alma, she worked in the public relations office and was a member of Kappa Iota, a social sorority.

Steven Bailey

Steven Bailey
Graduation: 2006
Major: Business and Mass Communication

If a person gets paid for drawing cartoons, you’d think that person might be an art major; however, Steven Bailey double majored in business and mass communications.

“Drawing cartoons is a lot like mass communication,” Bailey says. “You have to think about the message you’re sending. A cartoon is a work of art and a message. The focus is on trying to express yourself to the readers.”
