Alumni Profile: Sara Brockdorf-Kassen '01
Sara Brockdorf-Kassen still uses her Alma education in her various career positions.
But, more importantly, she carries the experience of her time at Alma throughout her life.
“I really became myself at Alma. It’s where I really came into my own,” the 2001 alumnus says. “That’s just the atmosphere there.”
Kassen, a communication major, went on to Northwestern for her graduate degree, and was a television reporter in Traverse City and the public relations director at Holy Cross College before becoming stewardship senior writer and editor at the University of Notre Dame.
The Blanchard native said she originally looked for schools with a journalism program because she wanted to be a reporter, but was drawn to Alma because of the strong liberal arts base.
“I decided that I wanted to go to college to get an education,” she says. “I knew the strong liberal arts base would prepare me to do anything.”
The communication program prepared her with small class sizes that allowed discussion, an internship in Philadelphia and a broad range of information.
“The communication degree is so broad, which is great because you need to know a little about everything in reporting and public relations,” she says. “I’ll still bring up stuff I learned in class.”
While at Alma, Kassen was involved in Alpha Xi Delta (a social sorority), student government and played violin in the symphony.
