Student Profile: Maureen O'Connell
Maureen O’Connell chose Alma College because she has the opportunity to specialize in her art major while also majoring in Spanish.
“Since I am able to attend a liberal arts college and get a Bachelor of Fine Arts, I feel my skills learned here at Alma College will translate into my profession,” the Jackson, Wis. sophomore says. “The concentration from the Bachelor of Fine Arts will give me more experience.”
O’Connell had a variety of concentrations to choose from, including graphic design, painting or ceramics. She is leaning toward graphic design and may become a graphic designer for a non-profit or service organization.

“The art program has given me the opportunity to learn about diverse forms of art, like wheel thrown ceramics, jewelry, life drawing and digital art,” she says.
Art majors also have their own studio space and are able to interact closely with faculty.
“The art professors always allow you to adapt assignments to your own creativity, and they are always willing to help,” she says. “There is a small, highly involved atmosphere for art critiques.”
She was drawn to Alma by a sense of community on campus, and is involved in Colleges Against Cancer and Relay for Life, Alpha Xi Delta sorority, Alma College Union Board and the Orientation Committee.
