Graduate Profile: Keleigh Lee

At a college fair, Keleigh Lee (Osborn) asked college representatives if their program could prepare her for a career in medical illustration.

Alma College was the only one that said it could help her reach her goal.

“Ninety-five percent of the reps gave me a look of confusion, and Alma’s rep alone said they had a graduate go on to be a successful medical illustrator,” the 2001 graduate says.

Lee finished her bachelor of fine arts in three years, majoring in art and minoring in biology. She is now a medical illustrator and also runs a small business creating henna art for pregnant women.

“Choosing Alma allowed me to get a good balance of art and science foundations within a setting where I could customize my learning,” she says. “Such a small art program allowed me to get the attention and support I needed to prepare well for graduate school.”

The Ohio native had taken college courses in high school at a large state university, and she knew it was not the atmosphere she was looking for.

“If I had chosen an art school the science would have been lacking, and a larger school would have been restrictive to my specific track,” she says.

In the future, she hopes to own a small non-profit company that focuses on research and development of public health materials supported by federal grants. She also hopes to earn her doctorate. While at Alma, she participated in and ran the life drawing co-op.

Alma College is one of eight Michigan colleges and universities — and one of 270 out of 4,411 colleges and universities in the nation, or 6 percent — to hold membership in The Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation’s oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization.
