What can I study?

Really, you can study just about anything. The University of Otago offers classes in a variety of subjects. Most classes are a combination of lectures, labs and tutorials. The class measurement is a little different, though. What we call classes at Alma are called papers there, and they are divided into 100, 200 and 300 levels. Each paper is awarded a specific number of points.

An eighteen point paper is usually equivalent to four Alma College credits, and a 24 point paper is usually equivalent to five Alma College credits, and and study abroad students typically enroll in 54-72 points per semester or 108-144 in one year.

Why Dunedin?

Glacier in New Zealand

The University of Otago is located in the city of Dunedin. With a population of 120,000, it is the major city within the province of Otago. A city by the sea, Dunedin has white sand beaches, bush clad hills, tidal inlets and volcanic landforms.

The city’s strong cultural bias is viewed in its modern public art gallery, its strong professional theatre, museums and libraries that rank among the countries finest. The heart of the city is lined with restaurants and sidewalk cafes. Modern shopping complexes trade alongside boutiques, galleries and weekly craft markets.

The University of Otago campus is situated in the center of Dunedin, a city offering the best of both worlds to students. It has the facilities, entertainment and variety of larger cities, with a wide range of social, cultural and sporting activities. However, it is small enough to be friendly, uncrowded and safe.

Where will I live?

You have the option of choosing from the variety of housing options available. Since room and board is not included in the program fees we recommend that you visit with staff at the Student Financial Assistance Office to learn how your aid can be used towards the cost of room and board.

Most local and international students rent furnished or unfurnished non-University apartments. Options include private or shared, and vary in size, location and price. You can also apply for University housing with board at one of 12 residence halls, but availability is limited and not guaranteed. Rental costs vary depending on the option chosen. You also have the option of a homestay with a local family, which includes all meals.

What do I need?

A student visa is required for entry into New Zealand. An application and instructions will be included in the acceptance packet.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term '09, students toured cultural sites in Peru, studied alternative energy in Sweden, analyzed theatre and dance in London, and examined Native American culture at the Crazy Horse Memorial in South Dakota.
