Study in Germany

Alma College offers approved programs in three different German cities. Each program has its own focus, so find one that fits your needs and your sense of adventure!
How much will it cost?
Services vary depending on the program. Alma’s Off-Campus Study programs include tuition and pre- and post advising. Additional services vary and may include room, board, excursions, transportation to and from airport or train, on-site orientations, health insurance and an International Student ID Card.
Semester Programs: You will pay published Alma College tuition, fees, room and board. If board is not provided, Alma College will adjust the fees accordingly.
Summer Programs: You will pay the tuition, room, board, academic fees and a $500 administrative fee.

How do I get started?
To begin the application process, visit the Academic and Career Planning Office (basement of the library). All applications are submitted to each program through the ACP Office on the student’s behalf.
Study the German language in Kassel, Germany
What can I study?
At Europa Kolleg you can hone your German language skills while learning about German culture. Upon completion of your final exam, you are officially certified by Europa-Kolleg, Kassel e.V at a specific language level. You would typically receive 16 credits for a semester program depending on course selection.
Why Kassel?
The city of Kassel offers something for everyone. Explore the world of the Brothers Grimm, as Kassel is the capital of the German fairytale route. Kassel is well known for its parks, castles, statues, waterfalls and lakes. If you’re looking for relaxation, take advantage of the extensive health resort programs and sports facilities for everything from water sports to golf to skydiving. Located on the broad Wilhelmshöher Allee near the gates of the old city, the school offers a truly international setting.

What are the requirements?
- Sophomore status
- 2.5 GPA
- Two semesters of college-level German
- No language requirement is necessary for summer enrollment
Where will I live?
You have the opportunity to live, interact and build a relationship with a German family. Homestays include breakfast, dinner, weekend lunches, private room, laundry once a week and bedding. Weekday lunches are not included in the program.
Study German culture in Berlin, Germany
What can I study?
Promoting intercultural exchange, the Goethe Institute offers opportunities to learn about language, culture, politics and society, promoting international discourse on the key concerns of what is becoming an increasingly global society. Intensive German language courses are offered at a variety of levels and durations.
Why Berlin?

Berlin, the capital of Germany, is home to the German parliament, 50 theaters, 170 museums and 3.5 million people. Located in the historical center of Berlin, the Goethe-Institut is equipped with classrooms, computer and internet access, a break room, a relaxing courtyard, and a restaurant on the first floor.
Where will I live?
You may choose between living with a host family or in an apartment. The host family option includes a fully furnished room, bedding and use of television or phone by permission. Meals can be purchased at a plethora of restaurants near the school. Local universities also offer inexpensive meals.
University of Heidelberg
What can I study?
The Heidelberg program offers summer, semester, or full year programs allowing you to find a period of study that fits your plans. You may choose from over 200 courses offered at the University of Heidelberg ranging from German Language to political science or from astronomy to music.

To truly become a proficient German speaker, you will be matched with a language partner, a German student with whom you will meet monthly for conversation and advice on life in the city.
Meet other German students by joining sports, music, or volunteer clubs at the University of Heidelberg. Four study trips are arranged each year to provide students the opportunity to visit other cultural hotspots.
Where is the school?
The American Junior Year (AJY) center is located in the center of the city and provides a place to relax, watch television, read or use computers.
Where will I live?
You will live in dorms or suites with German and other international students.
What are the requirements?
- Two years of college-level German
- 3.0 GPA
What do I need?
A passport is required for participation and must be valid at least 180 days beyond the last date of the program.
A Residence Permit is required upon arrival. An application and instructions will be included in the acceptance packet, and additional information regarding registration is distributed during orientation.
