Why London?

London is packed full of world-renowned museums, theatres, famous landmarks and bustling street markets. It’s cosmopolitan, exciting and one of the safest capital cities in the world.

Behind the tourist façade are the hidden city of pubs, sandwich bars, cheap cafes, early morning commuting and nightclubs. Whether living in the comfortable suburb of Harrow or in a Residence Hall overlooking Madame Tussaud’s, you become part of a truly cosmopolitan community.

Alma College currently offers two approved off-campus study options to England: Regent’s American College of London and University of Westminster.

What can I study?

At the University you have a chance to study classes across disciplines as well as take part in an unpaid internships. Normal class loads are three to four classes, and students with internships are required to take two additional classes.

Where is the school?

The University of Westminster’s West End campuses are only a few minutes away from the Houses of the Parliament and the BBC, the Stock Exchange and the British Library.

What are the requirements?

  • 3.0 GPA

Where will I live?

You have a choice of residence halls that are located at various points throughout London. All are self-catered, however there are dining halls on all major university sites. You are responsible for purchasing and preparing your own meals. All halls are equipped with washbasins in the rooms and bathroom, shower facilities and telephones on each floor. Kitchens provide cookers, microwaves and refrigerators.

What can I study?

You can take classes in a variety of fields including business, psychology, literature, communications, history, biology, political science, Spanish and film. The normal class load at Regent’s is approximately three to six courses per semester.

Where is the school?

Regent’s College is set in Regent’s Park, one of London’s Royal Parks. Regent’s Park has attractions such as Queen Mary’s garden, an open-air theatre, a boating lake and the London Zoo. It is close to public transportation and within easy reach of all London’s attractions.

The college has plenty or resources for recreation time, whether you wish to play sport, exercise or relax in the student bar. You have access to the facilities of the student center, which has a music room, stores sports equipment, as well as information for theatre productions, art exhibitions, and day trips to cities and historical sites.

Where will I live?

Regent’s College offers on- and off-campus housing. Reid Hall is a four-story dorm housing 240 students. Rooms are furnished, and linen and duvets (comforters) are provided every two weeks. The hall reception is staffed 24 hours a day, each floor has an RA, and a member of Student Services lives on site. Students residing in on-campus housing are given a meal plan card with a fixed dollar amount credited to the account for purchasing college food.

There are three off-campus options. Independent Residence Halls are run independently of Regents but provide dormitory housing similar to Reid Hall. A full meal plan for use on campus will be provided.

The college will rent local apartments to house those who cannot be housed on campus and those who have chosen off campus as their first choice. The apartments will be local and will receive a half meal plan since students will have access to a kitchen.

You also have the opportunity to live in a British home and enjoy a “hands-on” look at the British culture. The majority of homestay options are in the Harrow/ Wenbley Park in London, approximately a 30-minute ride from campus by underground lines.

What do I need?

A passport is required for study abroad and must be valid at least 180 days beyond the last date of the program.

Specific immigration regulations apply to students in the U.K. for less than six months. An application and instructions will be included in the acceptance packet.

Semester Programs: You will pay published Alma College tuition, fees, room and board. If board is not provided, Alma College will adjust the fees accordingly.

Summer Programs: You will pay the tuition, room, board, academic fees and a $500 administrative fee.

How do I get started?

To begin the application process, visit the Academic and Career Planning Office (basement of the library). All applications are submitted to each program through the ACP Office on the student’s behalf. Alma College Off-Campus Study Program credit approval forms must be completed prior to transferring the credits back to Alma.

 

Alma is one of seven Michigan colleges and universities to hold membership in the Omicron Delta Kappa Society, the national leadership society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character.
