New York Arts Program

Intern in New York City!

Where can I intern?

Are you interested in a career in the arts? At the New York Arts Program, you work as an apprentice to a producing artist or organization that deals with the arts. You will have the opportunity to learn about independent life in a city and learn about the challenges and successes in the daily life of an art professional. You earn a full semester’s credit load through an internship for 30-40 hours/week and keeping a journal throughout the process for 15 weeks in the Fall or Winter semesters or a ten week spring term.

Why New York?

A city of more than 8 million people, New York is one of the most powerful cities in the US. It is the home to cultural center of art, music, theater, politics, media and history. Called “the city that never sleeps,” New York is known for its influence on fashion and entertainment. From its ethnically diverse neighborhoods to monuments like the Statue of Liberty and Empire State building, life in NYC is always exciting.

What are the requirements?

  • 2.50 GPA
  • All majors may apply but the program is designed for those who have a serious interest in performing, visual and media arts
  • A portfolio is required for placements with artists and designers

Where will I live?

You will live in furnished apartments (normally two students/apartment) located on four floors of a mid-town Manhattan townhouse in a safe neighborhood. Kitchens and lounges are shared among residents. Housing and Meals are not included in the New York Arts Program fee.

How much will it cost?

The New York Arts program fee does not include housing, meals, or transportation; however, students receive a weekly stipend from the program to help defray some of these costs.

Semester Programs: You will pay published Alma College tuition and fees. Since room and board is not provided, Alma College will adjust the fees accordingly.

Summer Programs: You will pay the tuition, room, board academic fees and a $500 administrative fee.

How do I get started?

To begin the application process, visit the Academic and Career Planning Office (basement of the library). All applications are submitted to each program through the ACP Office on the student’s behalf.

Alma students can explore the environmental wonders of the Galapagos Islands, practice Spanish language skills, study Ecuadorian culture, complete coursework in business finance, and fulfill a South American internship in entrepreneurship through Alma College's one-of-a-kind partnership with Equatorialis University in Quito, Ecuador.

Alma’s off-campus study programs do more than place students in exciting locales to meet interesting people; they also create new opportunities for personal growth and skill development. One of the best ways to learn about other societies and cultures is to study and travel in international settings. You do not always have to know a foreign language.
