Why Washington, D.C.?

The capital of the United States, Washington DC is the center of U.S. government, politics and numerous nonprofit organizations. This makes it the perfect place to find an internship in almost any field. You’ll have the whole semester to explore the nation’s most historic monuments, from the Lincoln Memorial to the White House.

Over 5 million people from all over the world live in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Between exploring the Smithsonian Museums, walking down the cobblestone streets of historic Georgetown, and eating at the plethora of ethnically diverse restaurants, you will never run out of things to do!

Alma College has two approved programs in Washington DC: The Washington Center and American University’s Washington Semester Program. Find out about both below.

The Washington Center


What can I do?

At the Washington Center you can have an internship in your interest area while taking classes in international affairs, arts and humanities, communications, public policy, criminal justice, homeland security, business and economics, American politics, leadership and research. In general, courses are held one night per week for three hours.

What are the requirements?

  • 2.75 GPA
  • Second semester sophomore

Where will I live?

You will share furnished apartments with other Washington Center interns located in northern Virginia, Washington, D.C. and suburban Maryland. All apartments have air-conditioning, internet, cable, phone, laundry facilities and a kitchen. Most interns choose to live in Washington Center apartments but are not required to do so unless they receive Washington Center Financial Assistance. You are responsible for your own meals.

How much will it cost?

Scholarships are available through the Washington Center.

Semester Programs: You will pay published Alma College tuition, fees and room. Since board is not provided, Alma College will adjust the fees accordingly.

Summer Programs: You will pay the tuition, room, board, academic fees and a $500 administrative fee.

American University’s Washington Semester Program


What will I do?

American University’s Washington semester program allows you to study a variety of topics including American politics, economic policy, foreign policy, international business and journalism, as well as have an internship. You will interview for the internship during the first two weeks of the program.

What are the requirements?

  • 2.5 GPA
  • Students of all majors may apply

Where will I live?

You are housed in dormitories located on American Unversity’s Tenley Campus. These residences provide computer labs, study areas, reading rooms and a dining room for program participants only.

How much will it cost?

A limited number of scholarships are available through American University. The costs of American University’s Washington Semester Program generally exceed Alma College tuition. Though financial aid is transferable to off-campus studies programs, you will be billed for 100% of these costs.

Semester Programs: You will pay published Alma College tuition, fees, room and board. However, if the total sum of the program exceeds Alma tuition, you also will be billed for the difference. If board is not provided, Alma College will adjust the fees accordingly.

Summer Programs: You will pay the tuition, room, board, academic fees and a $500 administrative fee.

How do I get started?

To begin the application process, visit the Academic and Career Planning Office (basement of the library). All applications are submitted to each program through the ACP Office on the student’s behalf.

 

Alma College has phenomenal 90 percent placement rates into medical and law schools, compared to a national average of 46.6 percent for medical school placement. More than 90 percent of all Alma graduates report working in full-time positions or attending graduate school within six months of graduation.
