Single Room Request for Disability Accommodations

Alma College

The Academic and Career Planning Office

Single Room Policy

For Student with Disabilities

The following guidelines are provided in the interest of assuring that documentation is complete and supports the request for accommodations. The Disability Services located in the Academic and Career Planning office will determine eligibility and appropriate accommodations, case-by-case, based on the quality, recency and completeness of the documentation submitted. The following guidelines provide students, schools, and qualified professionals with a common understanding of the components of documentation that are necessary to validate a diagnosis of a disability, the impact on the individualâs educational performance, and the need for academic accommodations for the purpose of the ADA and Section 504.

Medical/Physical Disabilities

Students requesting a single room or off campus housing for medical/physical reasons must obtain signed documentation of disability or medical condition from a qualified professional (treating physician, clinician or therapist). The statement from the treating professional must include; 1) Documentation of assessment, 2) A prescriptive recommendation for a single room as a specific accommodation, 3) a statement of other potential ways to accommodate for the student's disability/condition.:

Psychiatric Disabilities

Students requesting a single room or off campus housing for mental health/psychiatric reasons must present a diagnosis of an ADA qualified psychiatric disability along with a specific prescriptive recommendation for a single room as a specific accommodation from the qualified professional who did the assessment.

Documentation will be reviewed by the Director of the Counseling and Wellness Center in cases of emotional and/or psychiatric disabilities. This documentation assures qualifying students a single room at the cost of a double (no surcharge as we would normally charge for the single.

ADA documentation may be provided at any time, however if the accommodation is expected to be on-going, notification at least one term in advance is appreciated.

All legitimate requests for accommodation will be handled in a timely manner however immediate relocation may be subject to availability.

Students can request a single through the normal "as available/surcharged rate" policy if they don't meet the ADA requisites. These requests will be reviewed by the Director of Student Life.

Alma’s close faculty-student interaction provides numerous benefits such as the ability to do undergraduate research on a graduate level. Alma’s professors treat students more as peers welcoming student input and collaboration on faculty projects. When students are involved in research, faculty aggressively pursue publication of findings including students as co-authors.
