While you proceed on your path of career assessment and continual adjustment, a parallel task is to become proficient in demonstrating your professional skills and abilities. Find resources and tips throughout the list below:

  1. Write excellent résumés, cover letters and personal statements.
  2. Network, network, network! Be sure to have your “elevator speech” or 15 second pitch ready. Build professional profiles in online resources. Get tips on how to appropriately connect with an alum by email. Check out tips for networking online through Linkedin.com.
  3. Use these interviewing tips to best showcase your skills and abilities. Also be aware of the benefits of informational interviewing in developing your understanding of various positions and fields and in building your professional network.

Bob Devaney, a 1939 graduate of Alma College, went on to become known as one of the greatest coaches in collegiate football history. In his 11 years as head coach at Nebraska, Devaney produced 11 winning seasons with two national championships. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981. At Alma he played end and was the Scots’ Most Valuable Player in 1938.

After taking a creative writing class at Alma College, Monica Rentfrow ’08 has an appetite for little else.

“I knew I had a strong interest for writing poetry when I left Alma,” she says. “I entered graduate school with a hunger for more techniques, experience and writing time.”
