“The month that I spent volunteering in the hill tribes of Northern Thailand taught me more about globally oriented leadership—and life as a whole—than all of the 18 years before it. Dr. David and his organization, Where There is No Doctor, followed a model of international service that has completely changed my perspective on an individual’s ability to make an impact on the world.

Learning about a culture in the classroom means very little next to being able to live with and among drastically different cultures on the other side of the world. I hadn’t thought of myself as capable from working sun-up to sun-down in the exhausting heat and rain, but after taking shelter from the rain in a hut that I had built, not only did changing the world seem possible, but it finally seemed worth doing.”

Alma’s innovative PRISM project—Positive Routes Into Science and Mathematics—gets more students excited about science. It engages students in research opportunities not only in their first, second, third and fourth years of college but also in the summer prior to taking their first college course. PRISM is funded by a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation.

There is little one can say about Bob Swanson without mentioning leadership. After all, he was Alma College's longest serving president, with 24 years under his kilt. From 1956 to 1980, he helped transform the College into a nationally recognized private liberal arts institution, both in terms of academic reputation and economic stability.
