McIntyre Center for Exercise & Health Science

The McIntyre Center for Exercise and Health Science helps meet the needs of one of Alma’s fastest-growing academic departments. The Exercise and Health Science Department emphasizes a combination of strong science education with generous lab experiences in human physiology, exercise testing and prescription, gross anatomy, athletic training, senior fitness and exercise biochemistry.

The McIntyre Center is visually striking, with exposed interior ceilings and extensive window space along the northern exposure. In the human performance laboratory, floor-to-ceiling windows overlook the athletic playing fields and Wilcox Medical Center.

Alma College received a $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation in August 2009 for research that could eventually lead to the development of more effective drugs to treat and prevent certain kinds of influenza, including human infections of swine and avian flu. "This project provides an opportunity for students to get involved in important laboratory research," says faculty member Jeff Turk, principal investigator.
