Dow Science Center

A photo of the back of the Dow Science CenterBuilt in 1959, the spacious Dow Science Center features a planetarium, greenhouse and equipment, classrooms and laboratories devoted to the study of physics, electronics, optics, astronomy, physiology, biology, geology and environmental studies.

The Center houses a central lobby with faculty offices, classrooms and extensive laboratories that promote student participation and faculty collaboration in scientific research.

Funding for the original construction of the $1.5 million building was provided by a grant from The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation. In the late 1980s, the same foundation provided a grant of $3 million to make possible extensive renovation of the science center.

Dr. Kristin Olbertson
Departments: History

Kristin Olbertson started college as an anthropology major, but a distributive requirement led her to take “Chaucer’s England,” turning her on to history. And while studying abroad she discovered legal history.

“I’m pretty sure I would never have discovered history, or developed an interest in legal history, if I hadn’t been at a liberal arts college that encourages a broad education, studying abroad and pursuing your passions,” she says.
