Administrators, Clerical, Physical Plant Staff Honored

Alma College recognized four individuals with Presidential Awards for Excellence at the annual Awards and Recognition Reception for Administrative and Support Staff on Thursday, May 15.

Nan Freed, Office Associate in Public Relations, and Ken Roslund, Supervisor of the Carpenter Shop, received the awards for support staff. Ruthann Bebow, Assistant Controller, and Mike Silverthorn, Director of Public Relations, received the Presidential Awards for administrators.

Faculty, administrators and support staff members nominate non-faculty colleagues for final selection by the president and vice presidents. The award winners each received an engraved plaque and a check for $250.

Freed was cited for her professionalism, patience and knowledge. “She always greets people with a smile, whether they are visitors or colleagues,” wrote her nominator. “Not only is she efficient, but she is focused on improving herself as a professional.”

Roslund was nominated for the quality and volume of the work coming out the Carpenter Shop and his “can do” attitude.

Bebow was described as a quiet, behind-the-scenes individual who has devoted more than 40 years of faithful service to the College. She was recognized for the role she played in the moving of the Business Office to the Student Services Center, from planning to implementation.

Silverthorn was cited for advances in digital media, using news media connections to advance the College, marketing placement in print publications and on television, and leading the redesign of the College Website.

Service Learning and Students Offering Service selected Alisa Dean, the College’s AmeriCorps*Vista representative supporting service learning efforts, as the recipient of the Outstanding Commitment to Service Award. Dean was recognized for her compassion for service and her ability to motivate others to serve. She has involved students in such projects as The Mentor PLUS Program, Kids Night Out, blood drives, and MLK service projects, and she has taken on leadership roles with Relay for Life, Alternative Break, Safe Zone, and Disability Awareness Week.
 
Recent retirees also were recognized at the awards and recognition ceremony:

• John Johnston, Assistant Controller, Business Office
• Marcia Smith, Office Associate, Alumni Relations
• Rose Peck, Manager, Mail/Printing Center
• Jim Mueller, Associate Professor, Economics (retires in August)
• Larry Wittle, Professor, Biology (retires in August)

Also recognized were individuals who have passed away:

• Arlan Edgar, Professor, Biology
• Jane Hall, Administrative Assistant to the President

The reception ended with drawings of various cash prizes won by Ron Zemcik, Tore Skogseth, Kathy Sanchez, Larry Richardson and Elaine Bigelow.



 

Alma is one of seven Michigan colleges and universities to hold membership in the Omicron Delta Kappa Society, the national leadership society that recognizes and encourages superior scholarship, leadership and exemplary character. The College also has 19 other national departmental honor societies.
