Deb Dougherty Oversees Off-Campus Studies

Dr. Deborah Dougherty, Associate Professor of Spanish and Director of Off-Campus Studies
Deb Dougherty still has a half-time teaching load, but the rest of
the associate professor's time will be spent overseeing all Alma
College programs involving international education, domestic off-campus
study, internships and practica.
"One of my big concerns is making sure students, whether they intern in
Michigan or internationally, have the proper academic and social
orientation prior to their off-campus experience and then have a good
reintegration when they come back into the campus community," says
Dougherty.
Provost Michael Selmon named Dougherty director of Off-Campus Studies
in July. Her mission includes involving more students in off-campus
experiences and helping them navigate the process.
"We are combining all of our off-campus programs, including
international study and internships, under one umbrella," she says.
"These functions have never been centralized before."
Dougherty plans to find ways to expand English coursework opportunities
— in subject areas like environmental studies, business and public
affairs — in off-campus programs that have traditionally served
language students.
She also will work closely with faculty in developing new off-campus
programs and experiences, including Spring Term travel courses and
Fulbright and other grant programs.
"This new arrangement should strengthen our entire academic program
while helping more students realize the transformative experience
possible in off-campus study," says Selmon.
The Off-Campus Studies office is located on the lower level of the
Kehrl Library at the former location of the International Education
office, which has been discontinued.
