Coffee Anyone? See You at the Cafe!

Something new is coming to campus: the Highland Java Cafe!

The campus' first student-run cafe and lounge opens on the first floor of the library in the Colina Wing when students return in September. It will offer snacks and beverages provided by Sodexho during regular morning and late evening hours.

"The students wanted a place to go early in the morning and late at night without having to leave the building," says Carol Zeile, library director.

Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) will manage the cafe. Proceeds will be split with 50 percent going to the student groups that work the cafe, 25 percent to cover overhead costs such as cleaning and lighting, and 25 percent for SIFE, with a portion going into a capital account for future cafe needs.

"This project was an idea that came out of a brainstorming session at the beginning of last year," says Amanda Zielinski '07, project manager and SIFE president. "SIFE's goal is to teach the principles of free enterprise, and this project has been extremely effective in teaching entrepreneurship."

Student groups can work the cafe on a volunteer basis as a fund raiser for their organizations. Groups may contact Mark Lavengood at 07malave@alma.edu if they are interested.

"We are tentatively planning on opening on the first day of school," says Zielinski. "We greatly appreciate the help that Jerry Scoby, Professor Lemmon, Bill Foor, Mark Starkweather, Carol Zeile and Bob Boyce have given us along the way."

Cafe hours will be:

  • 8 to 10 a.m. Mondays through Fridays
  • 10 p.m. to midnight Sundays through Thursdays
  • 10 a.m. to noon Saturdays

The cafe is a small part of the larger library renovation project that will provide enhanced teaching and learning space for students and faculty.

"Input from the College community told us that we needed more group study space, more comfortable and up-to-date seating, a cafe, a more visible Writing Center and better accessibility to computers in the library," says Zeile. "The result of the renovation is a flexible, practical and visually pleasing space that will serve the community well. My special thanks to all library staff members who worked very hard this spring and summer to make the project possible."

Zeile is hopeful that the renovations will be complete by the start of Fall Term.

The memory and spiritual ideals of the late Bishop Thomas Makarios remain alive in a figurative sculpture that was dedicated in May 2009 near the center of campus. The Bishop, professor of religious studies at Alma for 25 years, was founder of the American Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Church of India and the first Metropolitan Bishop of Canada, United Kingdom and Europe, and South Africa.
