Lofts
Having a loft can be simple if you do the following:
- Lofts are allowed in the following Residence Halls: Gelston, Brazell, and Nisbet. Please check with your Hall Director for any restrictions for your room.
- Submit a 1-page detailed loft plan to the Physical Plant Director. You can use the Supplied Design (in pdf/Adobe Acrobat format for easy printing) or submit your own. The plan must show the structural supports, indicate the dimension of the lumber used, provide the height, width, and length of the loft. Include your name, campus address and phone number. You may fax your loft plan to us over the summer at (989) 463-7125. Please remember to include your summer mailing address.
- When your loft is approved, we will send you a copy for your Hall Director. If it does not pass safety guidelines, we will contact you for clarification/modifications to the design. Please note that all lofts will be inspected according to the designs submitted, and lofts erected without approval will be removed and fines may be imposed.
- When a loft is installed, the student is responsible for the safe storage of the existing furniture if not used. Please contact your Hall Director for possible storage options.
- Any further questions? Check with your Hall Director or call Physical Plant at 989 463-7162.

Student Guidelines and Responsibilities
Please take a moment to read the following information regarding student guidelines and responsibilities. This information may help you minimize/eliminate potential charges for damages and services.
Room Condition: Please complete your room check-in form. This form is the best way to document the condition of the room when you receive it. We are attempting to improve the condition of each room and need your assistance by minimizing the damages to walls and ceilings. Please do not put nails or screws into the walls and ceiling. Also refrain from using duct tape, it will leave glue residue and will damage the paint. Use masking tape or nonmaring adhesive devices i.e. Fun Tak, removable mounting squares etc. to install bulletin boards or pictures. Be advised, we will hold students accountable for the cost of repairs for all damages.
Vacating Room: We ask that you return the room to a condition that is as good or better than when it was received. If you installed a loft, it is your responsibility to return and properly set up all furniture that was removed. Please make sure that you complete your room checkout form prior to your leaving. Having your RA sign this form assures that you will not be charged for any missing furniture or damages that occur after you vacate the room.
Hallway Use: Due to fire regulations, please only post personal items on the door to your room and the provided bulletin boards. For fire safety reasons, do not block hallway or stairway doors open. Halls must be kept clear of tripping hazards like extension cords, Christmas tree style lighting and holiday decorations. Personal murals or sketching on any wall is not permitted and will be removed at the student's expense.
Room Damages: Students will be held financially responsible for damages to furniture, walls and ceilings. These charges may include the repair or replacement of furniture, cleaning of room, repair and painting of walls and ceilings. Personal murals, wall paper and vinyl borders or sketching on any wall is not permitted and will be removed at the student's expense.
