Visiting Assistant Professor/Instructor of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry at Alma College invites applications for two full-time, one year Visiting Assistant Professor/Instructor positions. Applicants from all areas of physical or organic chemistry are encouraged to apply. Candidates will be evaluated on their potential as enthusiastic teachers and their promise for developing a student-intensive research program in an undergraduate liberal arts setting. Applicants with an interest in interdisciplinary applications are welcomed. A Ph.D. is required for appointment at the Visiting Assistant Professor rank.
Teaching Responsibilities: A successful physical chemistry applicant will teach the lecture and laboratory portion of Physical Chemistry I and II courses and participate in the shared instruction of senior seminar. Other areas of involvement could include CHM115 (Introductory Chemistry: Chemical Analysis). A successful organic chemistry applicant will teach the lecture and laboratory portion of Organic Chemistry I and II courses and participate in the shared instruction of senior seminar. Other areas of involvement could include CHM115 (Introductory Chemistry: Chemical Analysis) or CHM103 (Basic Chemical Investigations). The normal annual teaching load is four lecture sections and four laboratory sections, or three lecture sections and six laboratory sections.
The Department of Chemistry is comprised of six chemists and one biochemist, and offers an ACS certified degree. The curriculum has been revised to respond creatively to ACS certification guidelines and to create opportunities for student participation in research. The faculty has a deep commitment to quality liberal arts education; creativity in teaching styles; student development in a residential setting; student research; ethical and values dimensions of learning; and interdisciplinary intercultural and international education.
The Department is housed in excellent facilities. Laboratories have good ventilation and hood space. The labs are arranged in suites with adjacent instrumentation labs. Instrumentation: 300 MHz multinuclear FT-NMR, GC, GC/MS, FT-IR, microwave synthesizer, HPLC, IC, AA, UV-VIS, ITC, FPLC and a glovebox. Workstations support molecular computations and visualization using Spartan.
