Assistant Director of the Center for Student Opportunity: Career Services

Position Summary: This position is part of the administrative structure of the Center for Student Opportunity (CSO), with primary duties focused on career exploration, assessment and planning, career events and workshops, development of a database of prospective employers as well as interactions with those employers. The individual in this position is part of the leadership team of the CSO and has primary responsibility for enacting the Alma Commitment for high quality support to prepare students for their years after Alma.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Required:
    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Ability to work collaboratively with all staff within the CSO as well as faculty and staff across the campus to develop and support opportunities for students
    • Working knowledge of software tracking programs
    • Strong oral and written communication skills
    • Good organizational and analytical skills
    • Knowledge of and ability to utilize social media
    • Strong computer skills
    • Strong presentation and public speaking skills
  • Preferred:
    • Master’s degree in related field
    • Experience in a higher education setting or working with college students
    • Experience working in career services

Supervision Received/Supervision Exercised:

  • Position reports to the Director of the Center for Student Opportunity
  • Supervises student and/or graduate interns
  • Supervises student assistants

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to sit and use a computer up to eight hours a day
  • Must be able to make presentations and travel

Responsibilities:

  • Develop system to train students in groups, providing information on interviewing and résumé development
  • Guide students in career exploration, graduate school and employment opportunities
  • Develop and implement career events and workshops
  • Facilitate and supervise development and offering of workshops to
    • conduct peer career program
    • review individual student résumés
    • coordinate annual placement survey and on-going data collection
    • facilitate discussion
    • assist students with long-term planning and career selection
  • Engage and supervise an intern and student assistants so they can assist with preceding activities
  • Utilize social media to connect with students, alumni and employers
  • Enhance Career Consultant LinkedIn Network of alumni, parents and community
  • Assist students with the development of résumés, portfolios, professional statements and completion of application processes
  • Develop practicum, internship, employment, and graduate/professional school opportunities
  • Establish and maintain a database of prospective employers and career opportunities
  • Implement communication strategies to notify students of opportunities
  • Expose students to career opportunities through job fairs and on-campus interviews with prospective employers and graduate school representatives
  • Meet with alumni to establish a strong networking base and generate internship, graduate school and career opportunities

Key Partnerships:

  • Work with both the academic community and prospective employers
  • Consult with key administrators to coordinate internship and career opportunities
  • Work across administrative and support units in the Center for Student Opportunity
  • Partner with Alumni Office to track graduates
  • Work with Center for Student Opportunity support staff to assist with database update and tracking
