Director of Nursing Education

Alma College, a selective, residential, liberal arts institution, is seeking a Director of Nursing Education to lead our faculty in the creation of a distinctive Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. We envision a program that builds upon Alma’s core liberal arts values and unique assets like the Intergrated Health Studies Institute and Center for Responsible Leadership, preparing entry-level nursing professionals to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams and pursue leadership roles within the profession and healthcare. We believe that such a program has the potential to become a national model of undergraduate nursing education and seek a Director interested in the challenge of realizing this potential. The ideal candidate will bring vision, administrative and leadership skills, and familiarity with curricular innovation in nursing and healthcare education.

The Director initially will be responsible for curriculum development, completion of Program Approval as required by the Michigan State Board of Nursing, and obtaining national accreditation by the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Subsequent responsibilities will center on ongoing program leadership, including tasks like: developing external relationships to enhance educational and funding opportunities; recruiting, mentoring and evaluating faculty; facilitating efforts to recruit and retain high quality students committed to a residential liberal arts education; and modeling faculty quality through excellent teaching and scholarship.

To receive full consideration, candidates must demonstrate an understanding of the core values of a residential liberal arts education and the role of this experience in preparation of nurse professionals. A creative vision for quality nursing education, teaching experience in nursing education, and significant administrative experience are expected. Additional requirements include: doctorate in nursing or related field; qualify for nursing licensure in the State of Michigan; and evidence of potential to contribute to the profession through scholarship.

Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Please send the following materials electronically to Dr. Karen Ball, Director of the Integrated Health Studies Institute, at ball@alma.edu: a letter of application, curriculum vitae, and three letters of reference.

A Phi Beta Kappa institution, Alma is a selective, baccalaureate liberal arts college committed to academic excellence and an equal opportunity employer committed to recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty, staff and student body. For more information about the College, visit www.alma.edu.

Faculty Profile

Dr. Andrew Thall
Departments: Mathematics and Computer Science

Dr. Andrew Thall is a man of many talents — as an undergraduate at Kalamazoo College, he majored in mathematics, but was only interested in pure mathematics theory. After college, he worked as a baker, and then in a photo lab, before going back to school part-time.

“When I began my graduate work at Carolina, I happened to wander into the computer science building,” the associate professor of mathematics and computer science says. “This was when they were designing their own graphics supercomputers and just starting to work with virtual reality. It was then I decided to study computers.”
