Energy Management Engineer
Position Summary
To manage existing mechanical systems in an efficient and fiscally responsible manner while overseeing research, design and implementation of new improved systems that will be consistent with the college’s energy conservation goals.
Supervision Received/Supervision Exercised
This position reports to the Director of Physical Plant.
Essential Functions
- Directs the operation of the campus steam plants, chill water plants and building HVAC, ensuring efficient delivery of heating and cooling to campus facilities.
- Directs the purchase and repair of equipment related to campus mechanical systems.
- Researches and oversees strategic implementation of sustainable energy conservation policies and projects.
- Researches and gains approval for energy conservation grant program funding.
- Develops strategic plans to meet short and long term goals that are in alignment with departmental goals that will increase efficiencies, reduce energy usage, and improve customer service and communication.
- Directs and develops strategic planning and contract implementation for purchased natural gas, electricity and water commodities.
- Monitors and tracks energy usage for efficiency studies.
- Builds on existing energy conservation plan by holding regular meeting with building occupants and staff to examine ideas, concepts, and payback-time implications of various conservation and renewable energy initiatives.
- Carries out technical surveys and energy audits of the campus assets to identify improvements in order to optimize energy performance.
- Establishes and maintains a positive and cooperative working relationship with all members of the department and campus community.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline, and at least two years of experience in a responsible role, or internship in a directly related role.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with data acquisition/control and communication networks.
- Understanding of mechanical and electrical energy management systems.
- Capable of obtaining State of Michigan drivers license.
- Computer skills should include: Word, Excel, CADD and others relating to the field.
Physical Requirements
Ability to work outdoors and to climb ladders, lifting, sitting at desk and move about all areas of campus.
