General Maintenance Worker
The General Maintenance Worker performs skilled work in the operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing and painting systems. The General Maintenance Worker also performs routine work using hand and power tools, measuring and testing devices to repair or remodel existing equipment and/or structures according to work orders or verbal instructions.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs skilled maintenance work in the operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing and painting systems.
- Performs basic carpentry work by repairing existing door and window hardware, replacement of vinyl floor covering and acoustical ceiling tiles, installation of office, kitchen and bathroom accessories including dispensers, shelves, etc.
- Performs basic plumbing work by repairing existing plumbing, repair/replacement of valves, installing new plumbing fixtures, soldering connections, clearing clogged drains and toilets.
- Performs basic electrical work by replacing switches, receptacles, fuses, breakers and other elements of the electrical system.
- Contributes to the overall success of the Physical Plant Department by working safely while performing essential duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Acceptable Qualifications
Education
A high school diploma or the equivalent is required. Trade or vocational
school training would be preferred.
Experience
Two years working in a general maintenance environment. A combination of an associates degree and at least one year work experience will be considered.
Skills
Requires general mechanical ability which includes the use of electrical test equipment, hand tools, power tools, special equipment and materials. Ability to interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams and schematics is required.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to lift and transport materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis and up to 80 pounds occasionally. Prolonged standing, frequent bending, stooping and reaching are required on a daily basis. Work may also involve working in confined spaces, climbing stairs and ladders while working indoors and outdoor in all seasons and weather conditions.
License
Must have a valid Michigan motor vehicle operator’s license.
Work Schedule
4:00 p.m. - 12:30 a.m. Thursday through Monday.
