Assistant Director, Operations and Maintenance

Alma College, a selective liberal arts institution is seeking applications for an energetic, service oriented individual to perform the duties of the assistant director of Physical Plant in the area of operations and maintenance.

Summary

The assistant director supervises the Physical Plant maintenance areas; carpentry, electrical, mechanical, grounds and motor pool garage. Reviews and assists in establishing the daily and long term work order requests priority and scheduling. Providing hands-on assistance with daily repairs and project work as needed. Will assist in the identification and evaluation of college facilities systems including mechanical, structural, electrical and recommending repairs. This is an administrative position working from 7:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. including additional time as needed.

Supervision

This position reports to the Director of Physical Plant.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manages the daily operations of the maintenance areas.
  • Inspects and assures the quality of maintenance shops and contractors’ work.
  • Prepares or recommends proposals for projects including budgetary estimates.
  • Assists in the management of an effective preventative maintenance program.
  • Managing of multiple facilities projects concurrently.
  • Updating the deferred maintenance list.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma and an associate’s degree in mechanical engineering or construction management or equivalent.
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible management experience in a commercial or institutional physical plant environment, including supervisory responsibilities.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands on experience with building automation systems
  • Mechanical engineer’s degree
  • Mechanical contractor’s license
  • CAD experience

Physical Requirements

This position requires extensive walking, ladder climbing, and other movements related to maintenance operations. Approximately 60% field and 40% office work required.
