Staff Accountant

Summary

This position will be responsible for conducting a wide range of accounting duties as well as other financial and business analyses to help the College be good stewards of its financial resources. This position is responsible for the insurance and risk management function as well as some tax related duties.

Supervision Received

This position will work with and under the supervision of the Controller/Director of Business Services.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare monthly bank and other account reconciliations.
  • Maintain the fixed asset system.
  • Serve as the institutions purchasing representative.
  • Monitor grant activity.
  • Serve as the college insurance and risk management person.
  • Conduct internal audit tasks and functions, as assigned.
  • Review daily transactions for reasonableness.
  • Serve as back-up for other individuals in the Business Office.
  • Reconcile flexible spending activity.
  • Review and approve monthly journal entries.
  • Handle rental housing units.
  • Assist with annual audit.
  • Maintain corporate credit card program.
  • Invest surplus cash within approved policy.
  • Complete 1098 and 1099 forms as well as the 5500 tax return for the College.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting.
  • Minimum of five years experience in an accounting operations in a complex organization, including strong working knowledge of fund accounting.
  • A strong working knowledge of computerized accounting systems, as well as Excel.
  • Excellent organizational skills and an attention to detail.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in higher education.
  • Prior experience with institutional tax return preparation.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit at a desk for the majority of the work day.
  • Ability to use a computer the majority of the work day.

The Alma College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team claimed its eighth consecutive regional championship at the SIFE USA Regional Competition in March 2008. The competition awards the SIFE teams that are most effective in teaching the principals of market economics through outreach projects in their communities.
