Communication Position

The Department of Communication invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant Professor position beginning fall 2007.  We seek a colleague who will flourish in an undergraduate communication program that emphasizes the study of mediated, organizational, and interpersonal processes of communication.  We see this position as an excellent opportunity to work in a collaborative interdisciplinary environment to develop teaching and research interests related to the intersections of media, emerging communication technologies, and human interaction.

We are interested in candidates who are prepared to teach introductory and advanced courses in media and mass communication and whose teaching and research interests include the applications and implications of digital communication technologies and/or computer-mediated communication systems.  Candidates' specific interests might include one or more area such as: mediated group/interpersonal communication, interactive media in organizations, multimedia message design, on-line communities, convergence, distributed networks, animations and gaming, aesthetics of mediated communication, media law and policy, etc.  Candidates with appropriate digital and multimedia authoring skills will have significant opportunities to work with students and other faculty in a multidisciplinary, project-oriented, New Media Studies program.  Strong quantitative or qualitative skills relevent to the study of new media uses and effects are essential.

Ph.D. in communication or terminal degree in a related discipline is required for tenure-track appointment.  Applicants should demonstrate excellent teaching skills and clear potential for significant, continuing, and productive engagement as a professional teacher/scholar.  Interest in collaborative interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching, including pursuit of external funding for such work, is highly desirable.

In order to ensure full consideration, applications must be received by December 8, 2006.  Preliminary interviews will be held at the National Communication Association annual convention in San Antonio.   Applicants should send a letter of interest that includes a statement of how their goals as a teacher and scholar may be realized in the context of undergraduate liberal arts education, a current CV, a copy of graduate transcripts, a sample of representative scholarly work, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and three letters of recommendation to: Dr. Joanne Gilbert, Chair, Department of Communication, Alma College, 614 W. In the more than 100 years since its founding, Alma has stayed true to its roots by keeping its Scottish heritage alive. Today, Alma features a marching band clad in Kilts, a Scottish dance troupe, student pipers and its own tartan. Each year, the College hosts the Alma Highland Festival and Games, which feature traditional Scottish games and revelry.

Terra’s Spring Term experience in China is a tremendous help understanding the relationship the U.S. has with one of its largest trading partners. The business administration major from Monroe has seen first hand the economic effects on southeast Michigan of low-cost imports and Chinese monetary policies.
