Asst. Director of Counseling and Student Disability Services

This counselor position combines generalist counselor duties with a significant emphasis in student disability services.

MAIN FUNCTION

Provide mental health, career counseling and disability services offered through the Center for Student Development. Offer students short-term individual counseling, and career counseling, off-campus referrals, and educational outreach. Assist the Director of Student Development in addressing mental health crisis and other situations with specific students.

The individual in this position will also work with students with learning and physical disabilities. Activities will include planning educational accommodations, negotiating service plans, evaluating documentation, providing strategy services to students with disabilities, accommodation management, and advocacy within the college and career advising.

As a generalist, this counselor will share career counseling responsibilities with other counselors for carrying out the multi-faceted mission of The Center for Student Development. The Center’s mission places a high value on serving a diverse population of students. The counselors provide a variety of services to help student with psychological, educational, social and developmental concerns.

The successful candidate will first be a well-rounded and energetic professional who works comfortably both individually and as a team player in providing effective Student Development programs. Especially important is an ability to provide leadership in the areas of emphasis while working collaboratively with other Center staff members and throughout the college.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Provide individual mental health counseling sessions for students.
  • Provide off-campus mental health referrals for students as appropriate.
  • Plan and conduct group and workshop sessions for students, faculty, staff and parents (e.g., stress management, interpersonal relations, etc.)
  • Plan and conduct training sessions as requested with other College staff who have responsibility planning and implementation of ongoing In-Service training programs for Resident Assistants, Orientation Team leaders, Peer Advisors, Student Athlete Mentors, etc.
  • Assist the Director of Student Development and Counseling and/ or other College staff in responding to student mental health crises and emergencies
  • Provide career services to students and alumni
  • Provide services to students with disabilities
  • Maintain files for students with disabilities
  • Serve as advisor to student organizations
  • Work cooperatively with faculty and staff
  • Maintain professional skills and knowledge in mental health counseling consistent with current professional standards of practice (e.g., journal publications, professional development seminars, peer supervision, conferences, etc.)
  • Maintain confidentiality as outlined in the ethical guidelines of professional organizations such as ACA, APA, and consistent with Michigan State laws and regulations for mental health counselors.
SUPERVISION OF OTHER EMPLOYEES
  • Possible supervision of master’s level graduate student intern.
EDUCATION

Master’s Degree or higher in Clinical or Counseling Psychology, Mental Health Counseling or related field. Must be eligible for appropriate licensure/certification as required by the State of Michigan.

EXPERIENCE

Two years of professional experience. Preference for persons with experience working with:

  • Alcohol/substance abuse issues, individuals with disabilities, especially with traditional age college students.
  • Groups
  • Awareness of developmental issues related to young adults.
  • Familiarity with ADA 504 and the Michigan Persons with Disabilities Act.
