Instructor/Assistant Professor of Music and Alma Symphony Director

The Department of Music at Alma College seeks a one-year Instructor/Assistant Professor of Music to serve as the Alma Symphony Orchestra Director.  The assignment also includes teaching courses in one or more of the following areas: conducting, music literature, applied music, music theory, special topics courses (i.e., composition, orchestration), or chamber music.

Responsibilities would include conducting the Alma Symphony Orchestra and taking responsibility for its organizational leadership.  Additional duties to include one or more courses from the following areas: private lessons (violin/viola preferred), conducting, music literature, music theory, and other courses based on the needs of the department and interest, expertise, and experience of the candidate.  The successful candidate should have a desire and willingness to lead an imaginative and energetic recruiting program that will enhance the growing reputation of the orchestra and the department.

A master's degree is required; completed doctorate is preferred.  Experience in teaching in a liberal arts setting is desirable.  Beginning date for this position is September 1, 2006.  The candidate will be expected on campus for a preparatory period in late August. 

Alma College is located in Alma, a town of 9,000 in mid-Michigan.  The Music Department has four full-time faculty and sixteen adjunct faculty.  A member of NASM, the department grants the degrees of Bachelor of Arts in music and Bachelor of Music in performance or music education.
