Director of Spiritual Life and Chaplain
Alma College seeks a full-time campus Director of Spiritual Life and Chaplain to assume the position beginning July 1, 2006. Qualifications: Master of Divinity degree required. Ordination in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) preferred. The ability to establish strong rapport with students of all faith perspectives, a broad understanding of vocation, and demonstrated programmatic experience required. Experience in a college setting is desirable. Musical ability is a plus. This individual will work closely with the Director of the Lilly Discovering Vocation project, faculty and staff in developing a College-wide emphasis on vocation and will serve as campus pastor to the members of this vibrant academic community. POSITION DESCRIPTION
Position Summary
The Director of Spiritual Life and Chaplain is responsible for the spiritual nurture and growth of students and the creation of a dynamic religious life environment on campus that includes worship, study, service, and other activities that honor the rich diversity of faith perspectives within the College community. He/she also will assist other staff in strengthening the relationship between the College and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) as well as other religious groups and organizations.
Major Tasks
- Serve as pastor to students, faculty, and staff.
- Facilitate regular worship services that speak to the spiritual needs of college students and include contemporary style worship opportunities.
- Create a vibrant religious life environment on campus through a variety of programmatic opportunities where students and others explore and develop their own faith and vocation and increase understanding of diverse faith perspectives and expressions.
- Serve as the liaison with students’ home churches in matters of spiritual care.
- Coordinate the activities of all campus religious groups with the campus advisors and serve as the advisor to selected student groups as appropriate.
- Provide leadership to maintain and strengthen the College’s relationship with Presbyterian youth programs in conjunctions with the Admission Office.
- Provide leadership for the Kirk Council and work with other areas of the College in maintaining and strengthening the relationship with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
- Supervise and, as appropriate seek resources for, the chapel and worship activities.
- Conduct religious aspects of formal campus gathering and celebrations such as commencement and baccalaureate.
- Integrate the religious life of the campus into students’ overall Alma College experience through effectively working with the Lilly Discovering Vocation Project Director and other faculty and staff.
The position reports to the Vice President for Student Life.
