Visiting Assistant Professor of Communication

The Department of Communication invites applications for a one-year, full-time position beginning Fall 2006.  The position is at the rank of Visiting Assistant Professor.  If the Ph.D. is not in hand at the start of the contract period, the appointment will be at the rank of Visiting Instructor.  We seek someone who will compliment the department's strong interdisciplinary program emphasizing mediated, organizational, and interpersonal processes of communication.  We see this position as an excellent opportunity to work in a collaborative interdisciplinary setting to pursue teaching and research interests related to the intersections of media uses and effects, strategic organizational communication, and interpersonal relationships.

Candidates must be able to teach at least one of the three courses in the program core.  These courses include an introductory survey of communication studies, introduction to media and mass communication, and public speaking.  In addition, candidates should be able to teach upper level courses in at least one of the three concentrations in the major: mediated communication, organizational communication, and interpersonal communication.  The successful candidate will also be able to teach at least one course in their area of special interest and expertise.

Minimum requirements include a completed master's degree or ABD status, a record of successful teaching at the college or university level, and a clear appreciation for undergraduate education in the liberal arts tradition.

Review of applications will begin on November 28, 2005 and continue until the position is filled.  Applicants should send a letter of application, a current CV, copies of all graduate transcripts, the names and phone numbers of three professional references, and evidence of teaching effectiveness to: Dr. Micheal Vickery, Department of Communication, Alma College, 614 W. Superior St., Alma, MI  48801.

Firmly committed to diversifying our faculty, we strongly encourage women and ethnic minorities to apply.  Hiring is contingent on eligibility to work in the United States.

Spring Term courses offer students opportunities to break out of the “Alma Bubble.” Off-campus study, especially in a foreign country, shows you how you relate to the rest of the world and how the rest of the world views American people, politics and policies. You can then integrate your real world experiences into your academic programs and your future career.
