English - Assistant Professor

Tenure-track position to start Fall Term 2005. The English department seeks a generalist committed to college teaching with a primary focus on journalistic writing, including new media, and a strong background and teaching experience in any of the following areas: world literature in English; 20th-century drama; modern British, Irish or Scottish literature; film studies. Position requires a Ph.D. and sincere interest in teaching in an undergraduate liberal arts environment that emphasizes close faculty-student interaction.

Candidates should enjoy teaching a wide variety of undergraduate courses and be committed to excellence in teaching. Other responsibilities include active scholarship, supervising undergraduate research, and service to the campus community. Our faculty has a deep commitment to quality undergraduate liberal arts education, including student development in a residential setting, and interdisciplinary, intercultural, and international education. Full-time teaching load is 6 courses per year; salaries, benefits, and support for professional development are competitive. All department members teach at least one composition course per year and a variety of introductory and survey courses.

The Alma College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team claimed its eighth consecutive regional championship at the SIFE USA Regional Competition in March 2008. The competition awards the SIFE teams that are most effective in teaching the principals of market economics through outreach projects in their communities.
