Summer Wellness Outcome: 15.6 million steps

Winning Four-person Team Accumulates More Than 1.8 Million Steps

This year's summer stepping program is now concluded, and the 2009 winner is the Steppin' Out team. Cassie Tennant, Diane Boley, Dan Henris and Tincy Goggin walked 1,814,293 steps during the four-week program in June.

“I’ve been trying to exercise more, and this seemed like a good way to start,” says Boley. “I already exercised in the morning, but I added walking at noon and even got out in the evening with my husband. Plus, since I’m fairly new to campus, it helped me meet new people. Now I’m parking farther from campus and trying to do little things.”

About 50 members of campus participated and walked 15,637,828 steps. The initial goal was 10,000 steps per day per participant, or 16,800,000 total steps.

Coming in second was the team of The Fantastic Four. Kathy Wilk, Lori Hick and Linda and Jack Hollabaugh walked 1,605,087 steps.

“I’m pretty good about walking, but the competition does help me to walk more, “ says Hollabaugh. “Walking with my husband was motivating as well, because we do it together. The Wednesday walks were fun because I got to see more people from campus than I normally get to see.”

All participants are invited to a celebratory walk and lunch on Wednesday, July 29. Lou Ecken will lead the walk, beginning at noon in front of the Stone Recreation Center. Lunch will be at 12:30 p.m. in the Tyler-Van Dusen courtyard.

“We were really happy with participation this year,” says Tammy Rees, head of the Wellness Committee. “We had fewer teams, but they walked more steps per person than last year. The Wednesday walks were great. People seemed to enjoy walking with people they didn’t normally walk with.”

RSVPs are requested for those who plan to attend the celebration lunch. Please contact Louann Lucas at lucas@alma.edu by 4 p.m. Monday, July 27.
