Conference Champions Young Women, Strong Leaders

“Successful women are reaching out to help a new generation to be incredible professionals themselves.” — Karen Klumpp

Alma College will host a Young Women, Strong Leaders conference for up to 150 college students who desire to interact with leaders in a variety of career fields.

The state conference takes place Friday, April 17 in the Tyler-VanDusen Campus Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The registration fee is $25. Registration forms are available online at: http://wrc.msu.edu/ywsl.php or by calling the admissions office at 463-7299.

The Center for Responsible Leadership will cover the registration fee of every Alma College student who chooses to attend.

“College students who are potential leaders on their campuses and in their communities and who are curious about the experiences of other women leaders are welcome and encouraged to attend,” says Karen Klumpp, vice president for enrollment at Alma College. “The conference provides opportunities for skill development and professional mentoring.”

Lt. Gov. John Cherry will provide the greeting, while Denise Christy, president of Humana Michigan, is the keynote speaker. Christy previously held top marketing positions for Select Care, Troy, and Priority Health, Grand Rapids. She has been a guest lecturer on health care and marketing topics at professional conferences and universities.

Other women professionals will address topics within their fields during workshop and networking sessions throughout the day.

Presenters will include Alma College faculty Joanne Gilbert and Janie Diels on “Communication Styles of Men and Women in the Workplace” and Ginna Holmes, director of Academic and Career Planning, and Nancy Gallagher, a local attorney and Board of Trustee member, on “Linking Career and Community Engagement.”

“What excites me about this conference is that we have some really incredible female professionals who will be here on the Alma campus available to students who will soon be in the workforce finding their way,” says Klumpp. “These are successful women reaching out to help a new generation to be incredible professionals themselves.”

Alma College is one of three institutions offering this one-day conference, joining Grand Valley State University, Friday, March 20, and Wayne State University, Friday, March 27.

Sponsors include the conference host sites — Alma College, Grand Valley State University, and Wayne State University) — along with Michigan ACE Women's Network, Michigan Women's Commission, Michigan State University Women's Resource Center, Michigan Department of Education, Office of Career & Technical Preparation, and the U.S. Department of Labor, Women's Bureau.

In the more than 100 years since its founding, Alma has stayed true to its roots by keeping its Scottish heritage alive.
