An Advocate for Volunteerism

‘I really enjoy helping people.’ — Hillary Forslund, AmeriCorps* VISTA

Hillary Forslund was very involved in volunteering as an undergraduate and brings that excitement to Alma College as an AmeriCorps* VISTA working with Alternative Break and the Center for Responsible Leadership.

“I really enjoy working with the students and being a sounding board for their thoughts and ideas,” says Forslund, whose office is in the basement of the Chapel. “It’s great to see students’ development in both the Alternative Break and the CRL setting.”

Graduating from Central Michigan University with an organizational communication major, Hillary came to Alma in August 2008 through funds from Michigan Campus Compact.

“Working as a VISTA gives me a great chance to gain some professional experience,” she says. “I’ve always been involved in giving back to the community, and working with CRL and Alternative Break allows me to do that.”

Forslund works to coordinate the site development and logistics for Alternative Break and runs trainings for the groups leaders and participants. She also works with the CRL Fellows to plan their projects and develop leadership plans.

Once her appointment ends in August 2009, she hopes to continue working in higher education.

“I really enjoy helping people, and I’m a very optimistic person,” she says. “I would love a position in admissions or as an academic advisor, because I really enjoy being able to connect directly with students.”

In her spare time, Forslund enjoys reading, the outdoors, being active and sewing.
