Hogan Renovations Include New Athletic Training Room

Phil Andre Supports Open Window Campaign

Phil Andre knows first hand about the impact the Hogan renovation will have — his office and workspace will be completely remodeled. But his desire to see his students have better facilities is what led him to donate to the Open Windows Campus Campaign.

“Giving to Hogan specifically is important to me because the students really need and deserve the new space,” he says. “For them to compete in the marketplace, they have to have facilities that will be good resources.”

Phil Andre

Andre came to Alma after two years at Olivet College. As an assistant athletic trainer he teaches five classes and is responsible for women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s swimming and baseball.

“I’m really excited about the new athletic training room,” he says. “The new equipment will increase what we can do as health care providers for the student-athletes — they’ve waited a long time for this.”

That equipment — including a hydrotherapy room, large cold tub, ice machine, taping and treatment tables and rehabilitation equipment — also will be used in athletic training classes. Alma’s athletic training program was accredited in 2005 and is only one of 13 accredited programs in the state of Michigan.

“I really hope everyone can see the importance of the Campus Campaign,” he says. “We work with the students in our day-to-day jobs, and sometimes we are overextended, but giving shows you really believe in Alma College and what it can do for students.”

Campus Campaign Leaders: Advancement, Social Sciences

The challenge to find out which College sectors can reach 100 percent participation to the Campus Campaign continues with several groups seeing gains in the overall percentage of people contributing. The leaders from December to January were the Advancement and Social Sciences sectors, both with increases of more than 10 percent. All groups achieving 100 percent participation by the end of the fiscal year, June 30, 2009, will receive the grand prize.

The memory and spiritual ideals of the late Bishop Thomas Makarios remain alive in a figurative sculpture that was dedicated in May 2009 near the center of campus. The Bishop, professor of religious studies at Alma for 25 years, was founder of the American Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Church of India and the first Metropolitan Bishop of Canada, United Kingdom and Europe, and South Africa.
