Pursue Your Healthy Weight!

New campus wellness competition will focus on weight loss, exercise, positive attitude

Gain a few pounds over the holidays? Want to exercise more? Need a new attitude?

Alma College faculty, staff, retirees and spouses are invited to participate in a new six-week campus "healthy weight" wellness program starting Feb. 2. The program will be competition-based, with four-person teams identifying and pursuing a total weight loss goal.

“The purpose of the Discover Your Healthy Weight program is to help faculty, staff, retirees and spouses become more aware of their weight and to offer ways to help lose weight through modifying the foods we eat, becoming or staying active, and maintaining a positive outlook,” says Cheyenne Luzynski, member of the campus wellness committee.

Fitness opportunities abound at the Stone Recreation Center.

As part of the program, weekly healthy eating habits and goals will be recommended, such as incorporating more fruits and vegetables into diets, cutting back on meat, reducing soda consumption, increasing water intake, and resisting sweets.

“Individuals who exercise regularly find it easier to lose or maintain their weight, so we will be encouraging participants to participate in available recreation and fitness opportunities,” says Luzynski. “Faculty, staff and spouses can take advantage of their free memberships in the Stone Recreation Center, use the pool in the Hogan Center, or participate in yoga, ballroom dancing, exercise classes, team sports like basketball or volleyball, or other group activities. The Recreation Center is available to help organize specific group activities.”

To assist in the mental aspect of the healthy weight program, weekly reminders will include exercises to help each individual’s positive self-image.

Registration is open now through Jan. 30. To register, call the Stone Recreation Center at 463-7949. You will be asked to identify a team name, team members, and a total weight loss goal for the team during the six-week program.

“Spouses of faculty, staff and retirees are encouraged to participate in this program to attain and maintain healthy habits beyond the workplace,” says Tammy Rees, wellness committee member.

At the end of the competition, the names of all the teams that meet their weight goals will be entered into a prize drawing. Based on the goals of the teams, an overall campus goal and weekly progress will be posted in the Recreation Center.

Watch your email and campus mailboxes for more information about this wellness challenge. Questions may be directed to Luzynski at 463-7088, luzynski@alma.edu, or Rees at 463-7148, rees@alma.edu.

Plans also are under way to schedule a campus wellness screening session — with measurements for cholesterol, sugar, blood pressure and weight — for faculty, staff and retirees who are on the College’s health insurance plan. Information and the date of the screening will be forthcoming.
