"A Day On, Not a Day Off"

Social justice is a recurring theme running through the Alma College week-long commemoration of the legacy of Martin Luther King. Jr.

Administrators, faculty and staff are invited to participate in MLK Celebration activities, which begin Jan. 12 with "Pay It Forward: The Giving Game" at 8 p.m. in Dunning Memorial Chapel. Other activities include street activism demonstrations, a special Chapel worship service, a panel discussion on "Finding Environmental Justice in a Dirty World," the second annual MKL Poetry Slam and keynoter Robert Bullard speaking about the life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. All events are free and open to the public.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to contribute to a campus dialog about issues of diversity and social justice. The MLK Online Discussion Board provides a forum for discussion and reflection on the events surrounding the Alma College MLK Celebration and the issues that these events raise. Posts may be anonymous or credited.

Keynote speaker Robert Bullard is director of the Environmental Justice Research Center and professor of sociology at Clark Atlanta University. He is the author of Dumping in Dixie: Race, Class and Environmental Quality and a number of other books and articles. Leading the battle for environmental justice, from dealing with the toxic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to curbing urban sprawl, Dr. Bullard tells the stories of frontline warriors who are fighting environmental and human rights abuses.

In addition to his keynote address at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 15, Dr. Bullard will join a panel discussion on "Finding Environmental Justice in a Dirty World" from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Jan. 15 in the Remick Heritage Center. Environmental studies faculty coordinator Murray Borrello will serve as the moderator.

Alma's "green" residence hall, Wright Hall, was completed in January 2005. The modern, 60-bed apartment-style hall features a number of environmentally friendly features, including geothermal heating and cooling, recycled-content ceiling tiles and carpeting, energy-efficient windows, rooftop solar heating panels, energy-efficient showers and washing machines, and a computerized energy monitoring system.
