Bigger Than Ever: Community Appreciation Day
Saturday, Oct. 21, will be one very busy day on the Alma College campus.
A free youth basketball clinic, inflatable games for the kids, and admission to a college football game as part of the NCAA's Take a Kid to the Game program will highlight the College's annual Community Appreciation Day activities.
In addition, more than 200 high school juniors and seniors are expected to visit campus for Explore Alma Day, a campus open house sponsored by the admissions office.
Community Appreciation Day will kick off at 10:30 a.m. with an open gym, children's program and basketball clinic geared toward youth 14 and under at the Stone Recreational Center. Admission is free and open to the public.
At 11:30 a.m., a community tailgate picnic will take place at the south end of Bahlke Stadium. Tickets to the picnic are $5 for adults, $3 for students and free for children 5 and under.
At 1 p.m., the football team hosts Albion College in a crucial MIAA contest. General admission to the game is $5 for adults and free for youth 14 and under. In addition, fall athletes wearing their school or youth team uniforms or warm-ups get into the game free.
"This year, Alma College Athletics and Community Relations are working in tandem to make Community Appreciation Day bigger and better than it has been in the past," says Lindsay Carpenter, sport marketing manager.
In addition to the basketball clinic in the Stone Recreation Center, youth may attempt to ascend the rock-climbing wall and get a photo taken with Scotty, the Alma College mascot. Face painting, children's games and inflatables also will be available.
"My hope is that the basketball clinic will attract youth from our community who might then decide to come to an Alma College basketball game this winter," says Carpenter.
Take a Kid to the Game is an NCAA-supported program designed to encourage youth to attend college sporting events. The NCAA provides giveaway items for youth who attend the game, promotional banners and posters, and free admission to youth 14 and under when accompanied by an adult.
Community Appreciation Day coincides with Explore Alma Day, a recruitment event designed to introduce the campus to prospective students. The program includes a "12 Great Things About Alma College" presentation at 9 a.m., followed by a parent-student panel, faculty-student service fair, academic sessions and campus tours.
