The Nikon Super Coolscanner 4000 ED allows you to scan film or slides into editable images. While it is possible to scan the slides into raw data, Adobe Photoshop allows you to process, adjust and edit your images into whatever format you need. Follow these steps in order to scan slides into Photoshop:
- Open Photoshop from the dock or click on Macintosh HD > Applications > Adobe Photoshop > Adobe Photoshop.
- Be sure the scanner is powered on. The silver power button on the bottom-left corner of the machine will protrude further when powered off.
- Insert your slide into the front of the Nikon scanner. It should fit snuggly, but do not force it.
- In Photoshop, click File > Import > Nikon Scan 4...
The Nikon Scan 4 Control PanelThis will open the Nikon Scan 4 program, with a control panel similar to our screenshot.
- In the "Settings" Menu, pull down the setting you need—either Slide, Color Film, B&W Film or Kodachrome. This will change the two drop-down menus to their approprate settings.
- Click "preview". This will do a quick scan. Check the preview to be sure everything looks how you expect.
- Click "Scan". A large version of your slide will appear in Photoshop, which you can edit. This may take some time.
- When you are finished editing you slide, chose File > Save as... and save the image as a JPEG. If you would like to have the image on a web site, choose File > Save for Web... instead.
The image created by the scanner is enormous—around 65 Megabytes, according to our screenshot. Your first task will be resizing the image for whatever medium you need. Photoshop also has tools for retouching, color correction and much more.
