The Canon ScanGear allows you to scan photos, newspaper clippings, sheets of paper or other documents into editable images. While it is possible to scan the slides into raw data, Adobe Photoshop allows you to process, adjust and edit your images into whatever format you need. Follow these steps in order to scan slides into Photoshop:
- Open Photoshop from the dock or click on Macintosh HD > Applications > Adobe Photoshop > Adobe Photoshop.
- Be sure the scanner is powered on. The silver power button on the bottom-left corner of the machine will protrude further when powered off.
- Insert your slide into the front of the Nikon scanner. It should fit snuggly, but do not force it.
- In Photoshop, click File > Import > ScanGear CS 7.0.0X...
This
will open the Cannon ScanGear Interface.
- In the "Color Mode" Menu, pull down the setting you need: Color(Photos) or Grey Scale for Photos, and Color(Documents) or Black and White for text.
- Chose your output resolution
based depending on in which medium your scan will appear:
- Screen (e.g. web pages): 75
- Newsprint: 150
- Normal Printing: 300
- Photo-Quality: 600
- High-Resolution: 1200
Remember that the higher resolution you scan, the more detail you will get, but the more time the image will take to scan.
Use the selection tool to mark the area you want to scan.
If the object you are scanning only fills a portion of the scanner bed,
this will greatly reduce your scan time.- Click "preview". This will do a quick scan. Check the preview to be sure everything looks how you expect.
- Click "Scan". A large version of your image will appear in Photoshop, which you can edit. This may take some time.
- When you are finished editing you slide, chose File > Save as... and save the image as a JPEG. If you would like to have the image on a web site, choose File > Save for Web... instead.
The image created by the scanner is enormous—your first task will be resizing the image for whatever medium you need. Photoshop also has tools for retouching, color correction and much more.
