Creating a secure Othello alias

While you can create an Alias to Othello once you have connected to it, or even drag the Othello icon into your dock, this is an insecure method of connecting. Anyone who uses your computer will be able to connect to your Othello share without your username or password. The steps below allow you to create a secure alias, that requires your username and password.

Mac OS X connects to other Macs using Apple File Protocol (afp). Typing afp://othello.alma.edu in Safari will perform the same operation as choosing Go > Connect to Server... in Finder. We can exploit this ability to create a shortcut to Alma's Othello server using a bookmark.

  1. In Safari, open the location http://othello.alma.edu. It's nothing fancy.
  2. Choose Bookmarks > Add Bookmark... or type Command+D. Add the bookmark to your Bookmarks Bar folder.
  3. Click Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks. You will see the Othello bookmark.
  4. Right click on the Othello bookmark and choose "Edit Address".
  5. Change the address from http://othello.alma.edu to afp://othello.alma.edu and hit return.

  6. Clicking this bookmark will now connect you to Othello. You can also drag the bookmark to your desktop or to the spot on the dock right next to the trash in order to access it from outside Safari.

Spring Term courses offer students opportunities to break out of the “Alma Bubble.” Off-campus study, especially in a foreign country, shows you how you relate to the rest of the world and how the rest of the world views American people, politics and policies. You can then integrate your real world experiences into your academic programs and your future career.
