Accessing Othello through a web browser

The following are basic instructions on how to access your Othello space via a web-based file transfer program. Follow the steps below for quick answers, or view the tutorial video (QuickTime, 7Mb).

  1. The Java applet will come up and want permission to be executed. Your browser will either have a Yes or Grant button. Click on the respective button. Click on the arrow to view the next page on using this java applet. [See it]
  2. When the applet finishes loading as shown below, scroll down and click on the Connect button. [See it]
  3. Enter your Alma username and password and click on the Connect button. Do not change any of the other fields or it won't work. [See it]
  4. After connecting you will see your computer's hard drive in the left window (Local File System) and your Othello folders in the right windows. To look inside a folder doubleclick on it as I am doing in this demonstration with the desktop folder. [See it]
  5. So I've double clicked on my desktop folder and now it shows me what is in the desktop folder. I'm next going to DOWNLOAD that file alma2.pdf to my computer. I first select the file, and then click on the Download button. [See it]
  6. A window comes up and shows the progress of the data transfer. [See it]
  7. As you can see, the alma2.pdf file is now downloaded onto my local computer's hard drive. [See it]
  8. Next, I will transfer a file from my computer's hard drive to Othello. I'm going to select the testcop.jpg file and then click on the Upload button. [See it]

How do you access other network shares besides your own? For example, what if you want to put something in your professor's drop box?
First, double click on FTPRoot.
Then double click on the appropriate network share point. In this case, faculty-staff.
Then you can select the person's account and work downwards to their drop box. Be sure to click on the Disconnect button at the bottom when you are finished. [See it]

Spring Term courses offer students opportunities to break out of the “Alma Bubble.” Off-campus study, especially in a foreign country, shows you how you relate to the rest of the world and how the rest of the world views American people, politics and policies. You can then integrate your real world experiences into your academic programs and your future career.
