Lisette Hoeltzel was recently awarded a Fulbright Scholarship.
In 2004, Lisette Hoeltzel ('06, Clawson) and classmate Erin Bernethy (senior, Linwood) travelled to India through the Alma India Program to learn unique lessons about education, service and life in the world's most populous democracy.
The Alma India Program is a unique off-campus program that combines a significant portion of service work with traditional academic work. Two students volunteer at the Mathen Mappilai Memorial (MMM) School in Ayroor, Kerala, in southern India, and study with faculty from Mahatma Gandhi University for one academic term.
In the spring of 2006, Hoeltzel learned that she had been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to study federal and provincial policies toward suicide prevention among the native Inuit peoples of Nunavut in northern Canada.
Lisette's accomplishment continues a trend at Alma; since 2000, twenty-eight Alma College students have won prestigious competitive national fellowships, scholarships and awards worth more than $1 million. Recipients include 10 Fulbright Fellowships and multiple Udall, Truman, Marshall, Goldwater and Gates-Cambridge scholarships. In addition, Alma has had one finalist and seven semifinalists for the Rhodes Scholarship.
The Honors Program at Alma inspires all students to perform at high levels but ultimately provides a pathway for students who seek extraordinary achievements and uncommon opportunities.
