Life's Deeper Questions

Dunning Chapel

Dunning Memorial Chapel, the center of the College's spiritual life.

The Dunning Memorial Chapel, with its tall white pillars and grand steeple, is Alma's most recognizable landmark, serving as a reminder of the College's founding in 1886 by a group of devoted Presbyterian clergy and laymen. Today, Alma College maintains a close relationship with the Presbyterian Church (USA) but also offers an environment that welcomes students of all religious backgrounds. Opportunities for spiritual growth and development abound for students looking for faith-based experiences. Chapel programming includes worship, Bible study, prayer, fellowship, putting faith into practice through service to others, and contemplating deeper questions related to God and personal faith. More than anything else, the Chapel is a place to meet new friends, explore new vistas and discuss any number of issues that arise in one's life.

Alma College received a $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation in August 2009 for research that could eventually lead to the development of more effective drugs to treat and prevent certain kinds of influenza, including human infections of swine and avian flu. "This project provides an opportunity for students to get involved in important laboratory research," says faculty member Jeff Turk, principal investigator.
