Environmental Sustainability

The rear of Wright Hall, Alma's "green" residence hall.

Water usage. Electrical output. In-room temperature. The residents of Alma's "green" dormitory, Wright Hall, can monitor the use of energy resources on a daily basis. As long as anyone can remember, a focus on environmental sustainability has been a hallmark of an Alma College education, and Wright Hall best illustrates the College's commitment to sustainability and protecting environmental resources. Designed with student involvement, Wright Hall offers a number of environmentally friendly features, including geothermal heating and cooling, recycled-content ceiling tiles and carpeting, energy-efficient windows, rooftop solar heating panels, energy-efficient showers and washing machines, and a computerized energy monitoring system. The new Wright Hall has won several awards, including the "Project of Distinction" architectural design award from College Planning and Management magazine.

Alma College is among the 10 percent of all colleges and universities in the nation to hold membership in The Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation's oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors organization.

Alma’s close faculty-student interaction provides numerous benefits such as the ability to do undergraduate research on a graduate level. Alma’s professors treat students more as peers welcoming student input and collaboration on faculty projects. When students are involved in research, faculty aggressively pursue publication of findings including students as co-authors.
