Commitment to the Arts

Percussion Ensemble

Alma College's Percussion Ensemble.

Packing crates. Tack-filled tin cans. Pickle buckets. Fire truck sirens. Conch shells. These aren't your typical musical instruments. But for Alma's popular Percussion Ensemble, anything lying around the room is fair game for producing interesting or unusual sounds. Sure, there also are the more typical steel drums, marimbas, timpani, drum sets and Latin instruments. The Percussion Ensemble is just one of many opportunities to perform at Alma. There's also the Symphony Orchestra, Kiltie Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Alma Choir, Scots on the Rocks, theater and dance opportunities, and art and design exhibits and competitions. More than a third of all Alma students take part in at least one cultural performance each year. And Alma's beautiful Remick Heritage Center is the region's premiere performing arts facility.

The $10.2 million Hogan Center renovation and building project includes the construction of a new sports arena and convocation center along with renovated locker rooms, athletic training space, natatorium, coaches' offices and classrooms. The "new" Hogan is designed to be Alma College's first LEED-certified building for sustainable construction. The estimated completion date is August 2010.
