Kilted

We are the Scots!

Okay, we're not going to beat around the bush about this: Our band wears kilts, both the men and women. It also includes bagpipes along with the traditional percussion, brass and reed instruments. But they're good. Really good. Phenomenal, in fact. The kilts are made from Alma's own patented tartan fabric — not something you see at any other college in the land. The kilts and pipes are our most visual signs of the College's proud Scottish heritage. We even host the city of Alma's annual Highland Festival on Memorial Day weekend, featuring traditional Scottish games, music, sports and revelry. Know this: You don't have to wear a kilt to attend or visit Alma College. Or play the pipes. But you will grow to appreciate the colorful aspects of Scottish culture and its contributions to our global society.

Alma College received a $150,000 grant from the National Science Foundation in August 2009 for research that could eventually lead to the development of more effective drugs to treat and prevent certain kinds of influenza, including human infections of swine and avian flu. "This project provides an opportunity for students to get involved in important laboratory research," says faculty member Jeff Turk, principal investigator.
